Colocation FAQ

Confused by colocation terms and phrases?  Want to learn more details about Core NAP's colocation service?  This FAQ will answer most of your questions:

Rackspace and Bandwidth

Generally, colocation service is divided into two parts - rackspace and bandwidth.

Bandwidth - All Core NAP colocation customers are provisioned with one or two (depending on product plan) unshared 100 Mbps, full-duplex ethernet connections.  Fiber connections are also available.  Bandwidth usage is calculated using the following two methods, depending on the contract terms:

95th Percentile - Utilizing this industry standard method, Core NAP systems perform a byte count every five minutes of the customer ethernet port(s), for inbound and outbound traffic.  At the end of each billing cycle,  the byte count samples are sorted and the largest five percent are discarded.  The byte counts at the 95th percentile are then converted into a Mbps rate for inbound and outbound usage.  Customers are then billed at the higher of the inbound and outbound Mbps rate.  For example, if a customer's inbound 95th percentile usage is 350 Kbps and the outbound is 1 Mbps, billing for that cycle is 1 Mbps.

GB Throughput - Just like the 95th percentile, Core NAP systems take a byte count of the customer ethernet port(s) every five minutes.  At the end of each billing cycle, the bytes transfered are summed and compared to the threshold for the plan purchased.

Rackspace - All Core NAP rack, wire, or caged floor space comes with uninterruptible power (via dual diesel generators and multiple Liebert and APC UPS battery backups), redundant HVAC cooling via raised floor access, VESDA smoke detection, and enhanced security features such as keycard and biometric scanner access and closed-circuit video monitoring.  Core NAP can provide the following options:

Lockable Cabinet Space - Cabinet space is available in either 1/3 or full racks.  Core NAP utilizes high-quality Chatsworth racks that measure an industry standard 19 inches in width.  Full racks have a usable height of 44U (a rack unit measures 1.75 inches) while 1/3 racks measure a usable 14U in height.

Wire Rack Space - For those on a cost-conscious budget, shared wire rack space is available.  This space comes standard with the same type of power, cooling, and ethernet connectivity supplied to our premium cabinets ./p>

Custom Cages - For those customers with larger, more specific needs, custom cages can be built to satisfy a host of requirements, including custom racks, cable trays, and power delivery.

Miscellaneous

Power - Each rack is supplied with one 20 amp, 110volt power strip.  Additional power strips and 208volt power outlets are available.

Optional Services - Tape rotation and other scheduled basic maintenance is available to all colocation customers.

Telco Friendly Facility - For those customers requiring telephone or ISDN lines, Point-to-Point loops, or alternative bandwidth for dual-homing capability, Core NAP has a 'telco friendly' policy that allows customers to bring in such circuits for a nominal per monthly cross-connect fee.
